Decisions, Decisions....
So the surgeon thinks I have a recurring medial meniscal tear, possibly due to some sort of congenital defect. He's sending me for an MRI Arthrogram this afternoon to get a good look at what's going on in there. After that.....we'll see.....
He told me the other day that if I can stand the pain, that I can go ahead and fence division qualifiers and the Reno NAC, and he'd do the surgery afterwards. However, i'm not sure if I can stand the pain. My new knee brace should be in on Friday, and I think it's going to be really cool, so I think I'm going to "test the waters with it" and see how things feel.
I really want to go to Reno and Nationals this year. I'm so bummed about the entire situation. Kaylah and I had an awesome trip to Reno planned, and I certainly don't want to miss it. Nationals is so close to us this year. We've been planning our trip for about a year....
Why does everything have to go wrong at once? My knee, my job, and my best friend moving to Asheville....*sigh*

So what is the prognosis then? Are you going to get the surgery or dope yourself up enough to get through the matches?

I hope you get through this alright. Wether you decide to fence or not, you can still have a good time either way. Jobs come and go, on the bright side, this opens you up for better opprotunities out there, right? And with how communication techology is nowadays, it's easier to keep in touch with friends, even with busy scedules, long distances and such. Things tend to have a habit of getting better with some time and effort. Hang in there. 8)

Sweetie,
I really feel for you. I have(had?) a meniscal tear in my trailing leg.
I am doing a fencing shoe which is essentially an orthopedic shoe for this sport. I will send you a trial pair free. I invented it because my own injuries forced me to invent it. Maybe it will help you.
Supplements I'd recommend from personal use which help ALOT!!!
A liquid MSM, chondroitin, glucosamine supplement. Take it 3 times a day religiously. Be sure and drink LOTS of water. Hydration is the key to regenerating this kind of tissue.
Also eat LOTS of jello and cartilage from animals like chicken bone ends and beef bone ends.
Personally I'd have the surgery AFTER summer NAtl's
Fencing tends to favor the outer quads over the inners and the inner thigh muscles like the sartorius. AS such the patella gets put out of alignment causing things similar to meniscal pain. Also by being out of alignment one side of the meniscus tends to wear faster. Strengthen the inner muscles and stretch religiously to protect the knee until then and also to promote healing once the surgery is complete. i.O.W. stretching is a good habit to get into prior to surgery. SEE a good yoga instructor.
I also wear a knee brace to help protect against hyperextension and sideways movement. I also wear a stretchy neoprene one underneath for tightness, stability, warmth.
Get your doc to prescribe you some good pain pills. You'll need them.
We all understand what fencing means to you. BEst of luck!!!

PS: Sorry this was sooo long. One more thing. Go to an asian grocery store in your area and pick up some Kwan Loong Oil. Makes Ben Gay look like a Y12 noobie. I use sooo much I practically bath in it.
